What to Expect During Your Initial Myotherapy Consultation

Initial assessments
Date posted
Your first myotherapy session is more than just a treatment — it’s a comprehensive assessment designed to understand your body, your lifestyle, and the underlying drivers of pain or dysfunction. At my clinic, the initial consultation runs for 2 hours, allowing me to take a thorough and individualised approach to your care.

1. Detailed Health History Review

I begin with an in-depth review of your medical history, including past injuries, surgeries, current symptoms, and any relevant conditions. This helps me ensure your treatment is safe, appropriate, and tailored specifically to you.

2. Lifestyle & Health Pillars Discussion

Next, I take the time to understand the key pillars that influence your health and recovery:

  • Nutrition & diet
  • Movement & exercise
  • Sleep quality
  • Stress management
  • Avoidance of risky substances/behaviours
  • Social support

These factors often play a significant role in pain, recovery, and overall health optimisation.

3. Objective Health Measurements

I then establish baseline measurements to better understand your current health status:

  • Body composition (body fat, visceral fat, muscle mass)
  • Blood pressure
  • Grip strength

These markers help me track your progress and build a clearer picture of your overall health.

4. Comprehensive Physical Assessment

The next stage focuses on how your body moves and functions. This includes:

  • Whole-body posture assessment
  • Functional Movement Screening (FMS)
  • Passive and resisted muscle testing
  • General and specific muscle assessments

This part of the consultation typically takes around one hour, allowing me to identify movement limitations, imbalances, and potential drivers of pain.

5. Treatment (Second Hour)

After the assessment, I move into treatment — tailored to your pain levels, goals, and movement restrictions.

I usually combine manual therapy and exercise prescription, as both are essential for achieving lasting results.

Manual Therapy May Include:

  • Dry needling
  • Massage techniques
  • Myofascial cupping
  • Heat or cold therapy
  • Taping

Exercise Prescription

Your program is practical and tailored to you. I often include:

  • Targeted single-joint exercises to localise treatment to affected muscles
  • Guided warm-ups
  • Strength training to improve stability and resilience
  • Stretching and cool-downs to support recovery

I don’t just give you exercises — I guide you through them and make sure you feel confident performing them correctly.

6. A Biopsychosocial Approach

My approach goes beyond just the physical body.

I provide practical, personalised strategies to improve other areas of your health, based on the biopsychosocial model, including:

  • Lifestyle habits
  • Stress and recovery strategies
  • Movement behaviours

If you need additional support, I can also provide referrals to other health professionals to ensure you receive well-rounded care.

Why This Approach Works

This thorough process allows me to move beyond simply treating symptoms and instead address the root causes of pain and dysfunction.

By combining assessment, treatment, education, and lifestyle support, my goal is to help you:

  • Reduce pain
  • Move better
  • Build long-term resilience
